Three Important Aspects of Practice

The theme in my past newsletters has been practice. In a continuation of that, I would like to share with you some philosophy from the Yoga Sutra-s of Patanjali that might help you to develop a balanced practice.

The second chapter of the Sutra-s is about practice - practice that helps us overcome the causes of our suffering and the obstacles to a clear mind. We can then awaken to our highest potential.

This chapter begins with Kriya Yoga – the yoga of action. I like to think of the three aspects of Kriya yoga like checks and balances.

  • Tapas is the first aspect of Kriya Yoga. The word comes from the root word that means "to cook." We transform and strengthen ourselves through heat - the heat created through discipline and breaking habit patterns. Here we purify ourselves and increase our will – we're doing.
  • Svadhyaya is the second aspect. Here we study, (through self-awareness, meditation, and teachings) and through that study, we move toward a deeper understanding of ourselves. Here we are developing greater self-awareness – we're learning.
  • Ishvara Pranidhana is the third aspect. This is about surrendering and letting go. We recognize what supports us, what is highest. Here we develop a relationship with something that is larger than ourselves and begin to decrease our own self-importance – we're open.

Through discipline, self-awareness and letting go, our practice has balance – enough discipline to keep doing our practice, enough self-exploration to understand our inner world, and enough surrendering to realize that there is something of greater vital importance than just ourselves.

Through the practice of Kriya Yoga, we have the perfect balance of presence, self-reflection, and openness.

Yours, in service,

KO

Home Practice

I'm a huge fan of kale and of asian flavors. Here's a very healthy raw + cooked kale salad. It can all be raw if you want to go that way - just leave out the cooked kale and use more raw.

Remember, old practices, newsletters, and recipes can be found on my website's goodspaceyoga.com/homepractice webpage. Enjoy!

Inspiration

The Radiance Sutras

Breath flows in, filling, filling
Then surrenders to flow out again.
Breath flows out, emptying, emptying
Offering itself to infinity.
Mind dissolves into heart
Heart dissolves into space
Body becomes a shimmering field
Pulsating between fullness and emptiness.
